Institute of Energy and Environmental Technology
IUTA is currently one of the largest process engineering institutes in Germany in energy and environmental technology. The institute was founded in 1989 in the course of the structural change of the Ruhr region following closure of the steelworks in Duisburg-Rheinhausen. IUTA is located on the premises of the former Krupp research institute. It has always been closely linked to the University of Duisburg-Essen and became an associated institute of the university in 1991.
The institute's work focuses on applied R&D projects conducted in collaboration with industry partners to transfer scientific knowledge into new or improved processes and products. IUTA is currently working with some 350 companies, ranging from start-ups of just three employees to global concerns with several tens of thousands. Virtually all sectors of the economy are represented, from large industrial plant manufacturers to makers of components with defined structures on the nm scale. Between seven and eight million euros of third-party funding are raised per year to finance the ongoing projects.Presently around 160 staff members are also collaborating with universities, especially the University of Duisburg-Essen, on fundamental scientific problems in the institute's core research areas. Alongside its scientific role, IUTA also works in documentation and information and, in conjunction with authorities, companies and associations, provides training and further education in energy and environmental technology. IUTA is a recognised training company of the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and holds all the necessary licenses, certificates and permits for both its Measurement Division and its Waste Treatment & Recycling Centre.
