The field of Highly Toxic Compounds combines activities aimed at measuring, monitoring and destroying a large variety of toxins, ranging from mercury and cytostatics to pain killers and mycotoxins from mould. Research highlights of recent years include the commercialisation of a high-temperature chromatography device developed by Dr. Thorsten Teutenberg, and successful proposals for several projects put out to tender by the Ministry of the Environment and Conservation, Agriculture and Consumer Protection in NRW. The Ministry is funding a number of large-scale projects to equip municipal wastewater treatment plant with a third purification stage to retain pharmaceuticals. In this context, Dr. Jochen Türk's department will focus in particular on oxidative decomposition processes and undertake extensive analytical work in collaboration with the UDE's Chair of Instrumental Analysis (Prof. Torsten Schmidt).
