In November 2009, an international Conference focussing on the theme of Risk and East Asia was organised by the speaker of the Research Training Group, Prof. Karen Shire, for the German Association for Social Science Research on Japan (VSJF) and in cooperation with the National Institute of Chinese Studies - White Rose East Asia Centre - UK (WREAC) at the Japanese-German Center in Berlin. The keynote was delivered to participants from Europe, Asia and the USA by Ulrich Beck, whose research on the world risk society and reflexive modernisation has also earned him broad recognition in Asia.
