Urban Systems

The main research area of “Urban Systems” is a Joint Center at which 70 scholars from all eleven faculties of the University of Duisburg-Essen work together to research solutions to the multidimensional problems and challenges facing metropolitan centres and megacities. This research is guided by the shared conviction that only an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach can result in solutions to these highly complex challenges. 

All research projects involve those disciplines and disciplinary cultures that are relevant to the solution of the respective problem. Depending on the research interest, highly diverse combinations of disciplines can emerge, and each project then leads to the formation of a tailor-made research cooperation in which those involved work together to find sustainable urban solutions. The main research area has become a highly effective research platform that spans disciplines and now serves to pave the way for, and carry out, research projects.
