Physics
Research at the University of Duisburg-Essens Faculty of Physics spans a wide range of subjects on many different scales. The largest piece of experimental apparatus stretches across the whole highway network of North Rhine-Westphalia. It consists of 2,500 automatic data detection units, which are installed on the motorways to capture information on traffic volume and vehicle speed. This information is then used as a basis for motorway traffic simulation. At the other end of the scale, nanowires are an example of the more minute structures studied at the Faculty of Physics. They are the result of progressive miniaturisation of electronic components in one of the University of Duisburg-Essens main research fields, nanosciences.
