The numerous activities undertaken by the Faculty of Mathematics and the profile it has established in its central areas of research are a solid foundation on which it can consolidate and build on its already strong position. All our research work is now conducted in a single building. The open professorships in all four of the aforementioned areas have been occupied and contribute to our traditional strengths as well as adding new dimensions. This has made us significantly stronger and also younger as a Faculty. We are now embarking on the process of networking the new research groups and learning from each other. In particular we have approached our neighbouring universities in the Ruhr region and begun coordinating joint projects. These are just some of the many aspects that reflect the dynamics of Mathematics in Essen at the present time.
